Improvements on the Way!

Plans for significant improvements in Downtown Louisville’s rowing scene continue to march forward. The City-owned Downtown Boathouse will soon have some much-needed improvements, thanks to funds included in Mayor Dave Armstrong’s latest budget. Additionally, plans for a new Greater Louisville Rowing Foundation (GLRF) boathouse that will be part of Phase II of Waterfront Park are still very much "alive and well" and hopefully design work will begin soon for the final site (down-river from the current boathouse).

The existing Downtown Boathouse will be upgraded so that it will remain intact and in use in the future. After the new boathouse is constructed, this facility will be designated for the GLRF high school program, as well as for LRC rowing activities. The new boathouse will include a bay for GLRF adaptive rowers’ equipment, with space for additional boat storage, or even a rowing tank in the future. Plans call for the new facility to have two bays that GLRF will lease to the University of Louisville for their rowing program.

What will be the immediate changes? Funds have already been allocated for the existing Downtown Boathouse to get a new roof and new doors, as well as lighting and electrical improvements. Design plans for these improvements are almost complete and ready to go out to bid.

Since this is a City project for improvements on a City-owned building, the timing of the project will be determined by the City. However, LRC member Beth Brown, who is a professional designer and president of Rowland Design Inc.,, has been appointed as liaison by the GLRF board, and is actively involved in the project to make sure rowers’ needs are incorporated into all design and construction plans.

When the roof work is started, the Downtown boathouse will have to be emptied. Boats will be stored outside–and life will be a bit confusing for all of us. But if we all remember that "no pain, no gain," we’ll be able to make the best of the inconvenience, and will end up with a terrific facility. Imagine–the only puddles we’ll worry about will be those caused by our oars–not those IN the boathouse from roof leaks!

Adaptive Rowing Program Receives Major Grant

GLRF’s Adaptive Rowing Program has been selected as a recipient of a $10,000 "Quality of Life" grant from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. Quality of Life grants are given to programs or projects that improve the daily lives of people living with disabilities, particularly spinal cord injuries.

Our Adaptive Program, very capably coordinated by Susan Radtke, will use the grant to provide additional equipment and safety gear to expand adaptive rowing opportunities in the greater Louisville area.

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation made 70 awards nationwide. "Though widely varied, each program focuses on helping people with mobility-related disabilities become more independent, more empowered, and better able to live the lives they choose," according to Dana Reeve.

We congratulate Susan and all the terrific LRC members who volunteer to help Susan carry out this fantastic program!

Welcome Back High School Rowers!

All those hardworking high school rowers are getting back into the swing of things, and several schools have already started their erg sessions. High School on-the-water rows should start in early March. We’re delighted to have all the terrific rowers from Assumption, Atherton, Collegiate, Sacred Heart, and St. Francis back with us for the 2002 season.
